THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING!

We’ve learned that the people who stay consistent and lean on their workouts and our community are the ones who manage the stress best and who come out the other side feeling great instead of depleted. Let us help you commit to yourself!

Emotional Discipline

I recently asked an almost patronizing question of someone I respect a whole bunch: How do financial markets work? Obviously I have an idea, but this was his area of expertise for almost 40 years. His answer shocked me.

"Sentiment."

“What do you mean?” I asked.

"It's entirely based on people’s biased, mostly uninformed opinions. The foundations and daily fluctuations are caused by people’s emotions."

Yikes. I realize there are nuances around this, but bottom line is that it's true.

Look at WeWork. Quick review. It's a subletting company. They rent space and then re-rent it to someone else. That's it. The founder of WeWork, Adam Neumann, claimed that his company was different. He claimed that his company was creating collaboration on a global scale that could possibly "solve the problem of children without parents" and eradicate world hunger.

Wha...?

His company was valued at 40 billion dollars at one point. It dropped to 8 billion when it tried to go public and exposed its books. Neumann was given a billion dollars to go away, and his investors took over the sinking ship. Most experts predict WeWork will be worthless eventually.

You can't blame Neumann for taking advantage of large groups of people who completely lost their ability to regulate their Emotional Discipline. They wanted this thing to work. They wanted every kid to have a parent. They didn't want anyone to go to bed hungry. They wanted to change the world, and the guy with the long hair and the beanie said his company could do it.

They lost Emotional Discipline, or as I call it, they did dumb shit.

People do dumb shit all the time. The CEO of McDonald's just had an affair and got fired. Someone, somewhere, is taking a huge risk by drinking and driving tonight. Dumb shit.

I'm going to pivot to tell you about the best hour of my week.

A member emailed saying she was going to quit. Her shoulder hurt, and she was done. She agreed to have coffee with me. She took the opportunity to not only talk about her bad shoulder but also a few concerns she had regarding the gym. I sat quietly and listened while she talked. She’s been here for almost ten years, so it made sense for me to listen.

When she stopped, I told her to keep going. I wanted it all out on the table.

I then asked her what her goal is, and I asked her to be as specific as possible. We spent the next half hour discussing the outlines of a plan for her and targeted specific dates on deliverables and commitments that I believe will help her achieve that goal.

She left in much better spirits, and I set off to work on her behalf.

I've been in meetings like this in the past, and there have been a few times when I’ve failed to demonstrate Emotional Discipline.

Now? It's ED is one of my greatest strengths and most valued attributes. I've worked on it for so long and so regularly that it's now become habit. I've come to realize that there is no black belt in Emotional Discipline, only the ability to admit that it needs to be worked daily, so I don't do dumb shit. Let me know if you want me to exercise my ED with you, and I’m always here to help you with yours.
